Vive Pro - Water Damage

I had a headset completely stop working in the middle of the day a while back. Tried all of the obvious troubleshooting and through a process of elimination determined it was the headset. Sent it in for repairs and they sent a replacement out. Got word later that when it was being sent to Taiwan for refurbishment, it was noted that one of the Liquid Detector Indicator (LDI) had been triggered (could have only been from sweat as the headsets were never exposed to any other liquids). Was told that there are 3 of them on the Vive Pro (not sure if they are the same on the old Vive) and if they are white, they are ok, if they are red, liquid has been detected by the sensor. Locations of the sensors are: LDI 1 - if you remove the face cushion and view between the casing and the frame , there is one inside the unit. LDI 2 – if you open the distance adjustment open as far as possible and have a look behind the nose shield rubber . LDI 3 If you remove the All in one cable , there is one beneath the Socket. Just thought I would pass on this information.

FYI, a high percentage of our repairs suffer from what HTC calls water damage, and what I call "normal, expected wear and tear". Commercial usage of the Vive Pro results in these false positives, it's inevitable. Between the sweat 10 hours of continuous usage can cause and the cleaning between sessions, I say it's normal and HTC should cover it since we use it as intended.

I have the Vive PRO and standard headsets. 2 of the standards have gone down from this "water damage" and have one other blacking out randomly which I suspect is probably the same issue, but none of the PROs yet. Do you know if covering the sensors could bypass this?

Hi @VoyagerVR, The sensors would only be used by HTC Vive to troubleshoot and won't affect whether water ingress is actually the cause of the fault or not. I had no problem with HTC Vive replacing the headset but if people had had their warranty voided because of this, this would be a different matter.

HI, got an Arcade VR place in France, got 3 VIVE (1st gen) in one year stopping suddenly working. returned to HTC, answer was Always the same : due to water damages waranty can not Apply (!) I was(am) upset as of course never any liquid had touched the Vives.. It is only caued by user sweat, and spray to clean the vive covers and lens .. That s a bug shame from HTC to avoid waranty on a normal use of the product..

That's really ordinary of Vive! Was that with the Vive Advantage warranty - I would be taking that further with a consumer protection assoc. if that was the case if you have a similar setup in France. They should be able to argue that case that the product is not 'fit for purpose' if you buy a commercial version of a product and should therefore be covered by the warranty. If it happens again, I would also check out those LDI locations (if indeed it is the same for the original Vives) just to check whether the LDI had been triggered and if it hadn't I would include that in the report before sending them in.
