Error 208

Greetings from Guam!

So I am stumped on a problem along with my partners in regards to an "Error 208." We've tried everything: Changing the cables, link box, uninstall and reinstalling steam vr, updating all drivers, etc. We thought it was the headset so we tried it on another station and it works.

The only real close solution we had was constantly uninstalling and reinstalling steam vr, but that only works 20% of the time.

Before we investigate an hardware issue with the PC I would like to ask the community if you've experienced this before and what steps did you do to solve it?

Ah error 208... my arch nemesis.

Looks like you've tried the usual routine for fixes, what I'd suggest next is plugging the HDMI from the Vive (the one with the orange trim) directly into your PC, bypassing the link box. Keep the rest of it set up normally (so plug the USB and power into the link box as usual), boot up SteamVR and see if that works.

Also try different extension cables if you're using any

We had this yesterday on one machine for the first time! We switched out headset, cables, link box - no change. Then shut down the pc, instead of restarting and on boot up problem fixed. It might be a total fluke for us though...

So a quick update..

I tried Peter's recommendation to no avail. I was really hoping that it would be the solution to our headaches! Thanks though Peter!

I went through process of elimination - Started with firmware, then hardware.. First wires, base stations, then finally headsets.. Ready for the weird part?

I switched headsets with another station..The computer did it's thing where it reinstalled drivers etc.. VIOLA it works! So it's the headset!

Hoping to recreate the error I switched to the original headset and it still worked.. I restarted the computer 3 times to see if it was a fluke and now it is working absolutely fine..My brain is even more confused. The headset with the original error also worked fine on the station I took the 2nd headset from.

One of my partners said that this solution will work for awhile and error 208 will popup again. I can't seem to recreate the instance to figure out what exactly is causing it. I'm happy that my station works now, but doesn't seem reliable..

I have a birthday party coming up in two days. Hoping error 208 doesn't pop up on that day!

Congrats Stephen on bringing your headset back to life! It's possible it was sweat damage and given enough time to dry up it started working again... I did get error 208 again on my headset and the fix I mentioned didn't work a second time. Definitely keep a close eye on yours.

Fortunately I was able to get mine replaced with a new one within 5 working days from HTC's distribution partner in my country (PBTech), but I still had to fork out for a whole new kit in the meantime. Now I've got a backup headset at least!
