Hey there,
I'd say the crash is to be expected, one of mine does it once in a while, if you can be a bit more specific we might be able to offer a solution, was it a blue screen for instance and did you get the error code?
The Base Station is unusual, they're usually pretty bulletproof but I've had odd issues once in a while, if under warranty then send it back for a replacement is your best bet.
The Updates for Firmware from SteamVR can be a total pain, It would often tell me there was a new one each day for some controllers which just didn't make sense so I've stuck to only doing them once a month and the problem has seemed to go away eventually for whatever reason.
You'll find a lot of small issues over the first month or two, the tech is not as precise or solid as everyone would like there and there are a lot of variables but be sure to post up on here when you have issues and the community is all too happy to help as we've all been through the same.
My 2 biggest things that I check on each station at the start of each day is to check that all updates are downloaded and applied for the Games/Experiences (I only do the Nvidia driver updates and hardware firmware updates once a month) and check your Audio settings too, SteamVR has an annoying habit of changing Audio settings for whatever reason.
The biggest way I've found to combat these problems is to setup your computers so that they do just about everything themselves when they start up, the best solution to any major problems then is to simply restart and wait a minute for it to be ready to go again (Yes, the age old "Have you tried turning it off and back on again", haha)
Also, keep a maintenance log (I used excel) to track issues, all the little things can slip to the side and not really get noticed, but having them all down on an excel sheet means you can spot trends which will make things easier later on!
